About the Stars:

During times of war, families with members in the armed forces sometimes display a service flag in their front window. A blue service flag is defined as a white field with a red border, with a blue star for each family member in active duty. A gold star represents a family member who died in service.

Use of service flags date back to World War I. By the end of World War II, the symbolism had been standardized. Blue and gold stars are the only colors recognized, but some families of injured service people are encouraging the use of silver stars for the wounded. www.silverstarfamilies.org

Blue Star Mothers:

Blue Star Mothers is a non-profit service organization—www.bluestarmothers.org. They send troops post cards for morale, care packages, air conditioners in the summer and heat in the winter.

Blue Star Mothers are also an endorsed organization for Carry the Flame, Inc. Carry the Flame, Inc. raises money by conducting an annual coast-to-coast motorcycle ride in support of veteran’s issues. Through this ride, they raise awareness about America’s POW/MIAs of all wars. www.carrytheflame.org
